Building Is Fun

UPDATE: This house is available for download (now with a green door!) from Mod the Sims. However, some people are having issues with it being usable in game. I have a feeling it’s a lot placement issue (like we get in TS2 sometimes when the terrain isn’t uniform), but I don’t know for sure. Let me know if it works for you or not!

UPDATE #2: I think I’ve fixed the problem! The lot has been repackaged and re-uploaded to MTS, so if you were having issues and still want to use the house (heh), please re-download! And again, let me know if it’s still being stupid or you have any other issues.

So I took a break from gameplay to mess around with CAS and attempt to build a house. This time I used the “motherlode” cheat so that I could do whatever I wanted, and man, it was a blast.

Sims 3

I worked on this house for about 6 hours, and I’m still not done with it! You’d think it wouldn’t take that long with just the base game items and no CC, but I’m still learning TS3, plus Create-A-Style is amazing and full of endless options. I’m sure I’ll get sick of the patterns at some point, but they’re still new right now. It’s overwhelming, really.

Newford: A Victorian Country House for You

I’ve put another house up on Mod the Sims 2 for you guys to download if you wish — it’s a Victorian country estate that I started building awhile ago and finally finished. Woo! It’s pretty massive so if your computer has trouble with large lots, you might want to abstain from downloading this one. (Or you could download it and have it sitting in your ‘hood just for looks…)

Click on the link below for more info, a ton of pics, and a link to the MTS2 page where you can download the lot. Have fun!

Grunewald Estate: Home of the Ravelos

Hey, all you crazy Simmers. Sorry I’ve been away for so long. My brain was crunching away on what to do about those darned Ravelos. But I’m back on track now, and happy to report that I’ve transported them safely to Shady Bluff, so hopefully no more crashing problems. *crosses fingers, toes, and eyeballs*

Here’s what I did, if you’re interested in the details: I moved the Ravelos out of Grunewald Estate and onto an empty lot. I packaged up that lot and installed it on my Shady Bluff account. I did the same with the Grunewald lot, now devoid of the family and whatever custom content might have been making it crash. Of course, story-wise, the Ravelos are still in Weatherby, so I’ll have to ask you guys to just pretend they’re not in Shady Bluff yet. That’s right. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

In the meantime, I had to refurnish Grunewald since I’m still using it for Ravelo pictures. So I figured I might as well fill it with mostly Maxis content and put it up for download! This offering comes with a warning, however: Grunewald was crashing when it was in Weatherby, but I’m pretty sure that was either because of the Ravelos being buggy or some conflict with custom content on the lot. It’s clean now, so it should be fine, but I just wanted you to know. Please do let me know if you have any problems with it.

There are three windows from MTS2 that I used, but otherwise everything is Maxis content. The windows are NOT included in the file so you will have to download them separately. I’ve listed the links at the end of this post.

I took a ton of pictures, so you can think of this as a little tour as well. Aaaand…we’re off!

The Whitehall

A new house for you guys — this one’s called “The Whitehall”. It’s similar to “The Gladstone” in size and shape, but just different enough to give you some variation in your neighborhoods.

The Whitehall is furnished in the modern style, and…here’s some good news: you only need Nightlife to play it! I tried out Numenor’s BaseGameStarter Pro (thank you to daysies for the suggestion and the link!), which allowed me to boot up the base game plus Nightlife (and ONLY Nightlife). I tested the house in my full game (all EPs), and it works fine, but let me know if you guys have any trouble with it, especially those of you who only have just the base game + NL.

The Gladstone

For the next house in my 1926 Sears Roebuck series, I give you “The Gladstone”. This style of home, best known as an American Foursquare, can be found in almost any town or city across the U.S. My version isn’t quite right – I couldn’t do the low dormer on the roof, and the pitch of the porch roof is too high. Supposedly there is a tool in Pets which allows you to vary the roof pitches on your homes – instead of having all roofs be the same pitch – but I couldn’t get it to work. Apparently even if you can get it to work, the change doesn’t “stick – it just goes back to the default pitch after you quit out of the lot. Boo.

At any rate, this is a relatively cheap home, well-suited to a small family or retired couple. The exterior can be customized in countless different ways to recreate the look of the foursquares you see all over America. I’ve included one example of an alternate exterior towards the end of this post (using completely free custom content, as always!).

The Vallonia

As I mentioned in my last post, I’m having a love affair with houses from the 1920s, particularly the Sears pre-fab homes that were popular back then. Since I have to fill up Shady Bluff with houses anyway, I figured I might as well have fun and attempt to build some of these old-fashioned beauties. For my first go, I bring you The Vallonia, inspired by the house of the same name in the Sears, Roebuck Catalog of Houses, 1926.

The Vallonia

The Vallonia is an updated craftsman-style bungalow with a living room, dining room, kitchen, four bedrooms, and two and a half baths. The lot is small — 2 x 3 — but the house takes up most of the space, so it’s quite roomy. There wasn’t any room for a garage, but hey, that’s what taxicabs are for, right?

The house is fully furnished using only Maxis items. I have all of the expansions and stuff packs installed, but you shouldn’t need all of them in order to play this house — at least, I hope not. If you have trouble installing it, try using the Sims 2 Pack Clean Installer.

I haven’t playtested it much yet as I’m on a building rampage at the moment, so if you happen to play it and run into any issues, do let me know!

Deja View

Here’s the other house I built over the weekend while dog-sitting for my bro. It didn’t make it to the Exchange for some reason (my upload must have timed out), so I have it available for download in a ZIP file from my own site. As with Porch View, it was created with the base game only and is totally hack-free. This house has one bedroom and two bathrooms, but the second bathroom could be converted into a small bedroom or nursery. It costs §84,993.
