Just for kicks the other night I played the Goths in Pleasantview. I had Cassandra marry Darren Dreamer and decided to build a house for them. So I picked out another house I liked from Sarah Susanka’s book Creating the Not-So-Big House, a simple suburban-style house with a lot interior character, and attempted a loose re-creation. Very loose, actually, since there are just so many things we can’t replicate due to the limitations of the objects and building tools.
Here are some examples of things I couldn’t manage:
– A winding stairway with a window seat on the landing
– A garage (I could probably fake one, but it’s just wasted space, so I ended up turning it into a master bedroom suite)
– A true island in the kitchen (not a breakfast bar)
– Built-in cabinets or benches of any kind
– Siding with trim to make the exterior more interesting
OK, enough whining. ;-) As I was saying before, I started out building this house for Darren, Cassandra, and the two boys, but I think I’ll end up moving it to Mt. Geneva and using it for a new family I created the other night. The master bedroom suite would be great for the grandparents, and the treehouse would be better suited to that family’s kids than to the Goth/Dreamer teens. Anyway, decided to share it with you guys just for fun.
Wow! Now that’s a suburban dream home. I want to live there! And I love the treehouse! I never even thought of doing something like that. And the interior decorating is absolutely fabulous. Great job yet again, Jen! :D
yet another beautiful house, Jen!!! i love the treehouse! yeah, i wish we have staircases that wind. i don’t have a spiral staircase in my own house, but it turns after so many steps. it’s kind of difficult to build that in an interior as opposed to an exterior.
Wow, that is one fabulous house. You have a great talent for building homes. Me, I need to practice more. The tree house is too cute.
Omg! I love that house. You sure have a talent! I don’t have Sims 2 yet, but I’m dying for it and getting it today. Yay!! I hope you’ll put some of your houses up for… upload?!?!?Also, my url will soon have a blog. Probably, later on today. (Wuv da treehouse!!)
Isn’t Creating the Not-So-Big House a great book? I get a lot of inspiration from house books! Great job, really, really great. :-)
Have you uploaded any of your houses (especially the Blackberry House) onto the SIMS 2 Exchange? I think a lot of players would benefit from your fantastic architectural skills! By the way, your journalism skills are amazing! The way you pull together these stories is awesome. Thanks, Dustyn.
Hi Dustyn, thanks so much for your comment! I have actually uploaded most of my houses to the Exchange (see my link under “General”), but not Blackberry House yet, mostly because I haven’t finished decorating/furnishing the upstairs! Heh. I’ll have to finish it and put it out there.
I can’t wait to download this! You decorate so well, I get frustrated with the lack of choices with the decorations, but you seem to make everything work!
The tree house is great!
I wonder, what is that thing on the kitchen counter that looks like a pineapple? Those black and white pics hanging your living room are those in the sim2 game or are the pics of your sims? That’s a great touch. Also where did you get the yellow candles on the black dish? Is that downloaded from the web or is it in the game? I love your house. Do you think the kids will understand that is a tree house? Great job on the house and I can’t wait to see more of it and hopefully see one of your character living in it.
Hi Mary! The pineapple thing is a bowl of fruit — it came with the game, as did the candles and the black-framed pics. It would be cool if I could put pics of my own Sims into those black frames, but alas, they are the same pics every time. Thanks for your nice comments on the house! Maybe the Dobbinses will be rich enough to afford it one day. :-)
