Blast from the Past

Anyone recognize this house? You probably won’t unless you read my blog back in late 2004-early 2005…

Shanley Manor

It’s Shanley Manor, where my very first Legacy family lived for 10 generations. I’ve always thought it’d be fun to rebuild it for TS3, and a Simming friend of mine asked about it, so I’ve been working on it in bits and pieces. It’s ridiculously huge, even by legacy house standards. I’ve pretty much finished the first floor (good thing I have all those old photos from the Shanley house tour!). It’s a weird house — very LONG — because I used to play it sitcom style, which meant I viewed it from the side and had all of the bathrooms (with their tall showers that get in the way) towards the back of the house (which was really the other side).

Shanley Manor

Sadly, there are no platinum headstones to put in the cemetery, but thanks to Generations, I could at least put a wedding arch in the family chapel. I also miss the 2-story windows we had in TS2.

Here’s my Sim-self playing video games in the study, just like the Shanleys used to:

Shanley Manor

I’m hoping to finish up the second floor in the next couple of days, and then I have another project I’m working on that may involve stories (and will perhaps revisit the Bunches and the Godfreys). Curse my Sims-related ADD — I’m always going off in a dozen directions at once. As always, thanks for sticking with me and continuing to visit my blog. Happy Simming!

  1. Wow Jen that is really cool and looks very close to the original TS2 version. I hadn’t come across your blog until TS3 but I did pop over and have a little read on what I had missed.

I do the same thing with showers too, it just annoys me that they get in the way so much!

Looking forward to more pic spam as always.

    • Thanks, LemonJelly! I know, I wish showers would disappear when the walls are down or something, but then I suppose they’d be tough to click on. ;)

  2. Do I get a cookie for screaming “It’s Shanley Manor!” at the top of my lungs when I saw the first photo (just about gave my ma’s dog a nervous breakdown, too), Jen? It does look great, though. Will we be seeing a Sims 3 version of Grunewald Estate any time soon?

    • Yes, you get a cookie! A big one, warm from the oven! :) And LOL, your ma’s poor dog…

Grunewald Estate…another ridiculously huge house! That one would be fun to build, too, though…you’re giving me ideas! That’s bad! (mostly because I need more hours in the day…or the Meditative Trance Sleep LTR…)

  3. Wow this is one massive house for sure, bet it takes them half a day to get from one end to another :)

    • Heh, I have no idea, actually. It ran fine in TS2…but that was before any EPs or even any CC had been released. I’ll have to test it in TS3 and see how bad it is. :)

  4. I’m not sure if I should applaud your commit*ment* to this particular project… or suggest that your nearest and dearest have you commit *ed* for taking on such a huge task!

I’ve no idea where you got the stamina from to do this… it’s so unlike you ;)

Hugely awesome, huge house, Jen – going to have to go read the Shanley Legacy now… and I thought I was conquering this addiction… damn you, Jen :p

  5. I totally squealed when I saw the picture because I knew exactly what house it was! The Shanley’s were the first Legacy Challenge family I read about and what totally inspired me to try it on my own. You did a great job translating the house into Sims 3. It never occurred to me to try that with my Legacy’s house (though they had so many major house redesigns that they never really had a distinct look for their home for more than a generation or two at a time). I also haven’t played Sims 2 in ages; it looks so weird now that I’m so used to Sims 3. :)

    • Heya Audrey! I’m glad you were able to recognize it. It’s funny how much stuff they actually recycled to Sims 3. I used to grumble about it, but it makes re-doing a TS2 house easier that way. Heh. What have you been doing in your game lately? I miss your blog!

      • Aw, that’s so sweet of you to say. I’ve actually just had to re-start my game because I got a new computer and hadn’t been able to save anything from my old computer. I started a new Legacy family (still named Legacy) and in my personal head canon they’re related to my Sims 2 Legacy’s, just some unknown many generations down the line (which I had done with Sims 3 on my last computer as well, so I guess this new bunch is just a different branch of the family tree). I think about blogging all the time, because I know I’d like to get back into it, but I also know that my interest in the game comes and goes so fast that I would never keep it updated (and I’ve become horrible at remembering to take pictures).

I also am not sure I find Sims 3 as interesting as I did Sims 2. Or I don’t like the direction they’ve been taking Sims 3 so far. I used to think I was one of those Sims fans who would buy every expansion regardless, but so far I only own Ambitions (and I’m not even all that fond of it). :( I don’t know what it is: whether the price of the expansions vs the content they put in them just doesn’t seem worth it, or it feels like they just recycle a lot of stuff from Sims 2, or I don’t like that some of the new “features” (the adventuring in WA or the non-rabbit hole jobs in Ambitions, for example) that make it harder to have a large family (which my sims tend to have). Generations sounded much more up my alley, but now that it’s out even it doesn’t sound like it includes all that much, so I haven’t gone ahead and gotten it yet. I am dying to have Pets, so hopefully that will be the expansion that -really- sparks my interest. :)

Anywho! I am playing (and currently sort of exploring the memories feature that got added in to my Generations-less game with the recent patch) and determined to get my new Legacy’s to generation 10 and beyond (I had them up to generation.. 18, I think.. on Sims 2, and generation 6 on Sims 3 on my last computer). I do think about blogging quite a bit; if I ever manage to take enough pictures to make a decent update, I’ll let you know I posted it. :)

(I’m done being all wordy now.)

  6. You’re not wordy at all; I loved hearing about what you’ve been doing with your game! I think I know what you mean about not liking the direction they’re going in Sims 3. I have a real love-hate relationship with the game, and so many of their decisions just rub me the wrong way. But wow, 6 generations into the new Legacy family! That’s awesome. And even if you don’t post regularly, I’d love to see some pics and hear about them. Heck, I don’t post that regularly myself. And I’m with you on Pets — I’m really excited about that one!

  7. Curse you, Jen! You just had to put “Anyone recognize this house?” in the beginning for people like me, huh? I had no choice but to jump up and down in my chair shouting “Shanley Manor! Shanley Manor!” at my computer screen. Honestly, Jen. Tch. >>
xD I am very happy to see you still remember the Shanleys! For some odd reason, I have the biggest obsession with them. I’ve read tons of legacy blogs, but the Shanleys took first place, by far. Hehe…
Just some more random babbling from a random fan. :3

    • Aw, that’s very sweet — thanks! The Shanleys were the first Sims family I became really attached to, so I’m always tickled when people enjoy reading about them!

  8. Wow, it incredibly looks like the Sims 2 house! When I followed your link, I thought I hadn’t understood it, and that it was a tour of the Sims 3 house… before i see the date of the post. Great job!
It was a funny idea to have houses like for sitcoms! I regret to not have known your blog at Sims 2 times.

Sim-You seems to have a lot of fun with her video game! I bet she plays Sims 3! *giggle*

    • Haha, I bet she plays Sims 3, too! At least she doesn’t have to worry about getting carpal tunnel or stiff legs from playing the game for too long…:D (I have to remind myself to stretch all the time during my marathon gaming sessions!)

  9. I can’t recall if I read your Sims 2 blog or not. I think I did (I know I’ve heard tons about the Shanleys on the LL boards), but not positive. If work ever goes back to the way it used to be, where I actually had time to goof off a little, I’ll have to go back and read it (again). :)
