The Luck o’ the Shanleys

Last we left the new Legacy branch of the Shanleys, Mia the Legacy founder had just given birth to her first child, Delaney, ringing in the 2nd generation of my University Legacy Challenge and the 11th generation of the Shanley family. As we all know, babies aren’t too terribly difficult to take care of — it’s the toddlers that kill ya. So I let Mia and Marcel enjoy their precious few days as parents of an infant before the onset of the Dreaded Toddler Years.

This is just one of those “random” snapshots showing happy Sim domestic life as Mia serves her first salmon dinner. (Regarding Mia’s tee-shirt: I just have to say that I saw Duran Duran in concert for the first time last week, and they were AWESOME. Yes, I’m old.)

Mia serves dinner
“Where did this plate come from? I could have sworn I was only holding the platter!”

Meanwhile Marcel the Knowledge Sim has been rolling up some odd non-Knowledge-like wants. For example, he wants to write and publish a Great Novel. I’ve only seen that happen with Fortune Sims. He also had a weird want to work in a cafeteria. I hated to break it to him that he wasn’t in college anymore and would never be going back, so he’d better give up that particular dream.

I did have him start writing the Great American Novel, though.

A Ghost by Candlelight

The days following the death of April Brayton were very difficult for her widower and child. Harry lay in bed most nights without sleeping a wink, often rising to check on Cecily Rose in the nursery. Watching her sleep, it was hard to believe something tragic had happened to her — she looked so tranquil, so unburdened. But when she awoke, she cried and cried as if nothing would ever console her again.

Of course Harry couldn’t take care of the child by himself — he still had to work long hours as a physician’s assistant for Dr. Hutchins — so he hired a nanny.

Harry meets the nanny

Her name was Arianna, and she was the daughter of the town greengrocer, Mr. Jalowitz. Harry’s first impression of Arianna was that she was a little cold — she always listened to his instructions with a solemn face and did her work with the most grim efficiency, never smiling or singing as April had done.

Welcome to Niadon

In my last Legacy Challenge: University update, Mia Shanley graduated summa cum laude from Sim State University and transitioned into an adult. A yellow taxi van showed up and whisked her away to…

…an empty lot! Actually, it just put her in the Sim bin, and then I put her on the lot, but that doesn’t sound as cool, does it? So here’s Miss Mia on her ginormous 5×5 lot, in the same spot where Shanley Manor stood (I liked that particular spot, so I just moved Shanley Manor down the hill a bit).

Mia plays games
“No house, no job, no food…who cares, I’ve got video games!”

Yes, Mia whipped out her handheld video game and started playing right away. This was my first clue that Mia’s legacy was going to be very different from Nia’s. I remember good old Nia really struggling through these first few days — she was stinky, uncomfortable, lonely, and borderline insane (hence the visit from your friendly neighborhood Sim shrink). By comparison, Mia’s first few days were a like a trip to Disneyland.

Before I did anything else, I bought a computer and had Mia search for a job.

The Brayton Legacy Begins

Many years ago, before the advent of the automobile or the television, there lived a gentleman by the name of Harry Brayton. The Braytons were the most prominent family in the town of Hurst Hollow, and Harry was the youngest of the family’s five sons. Quiet and thoughtful as a child, he was deemed “simple” by his father, who as the town physician “knew” about such things. The rest of the family largely ignored Harry. He watched as his brothers followed in their father’s footsteps to become respectable physicians, not even allowing Harry to lean over their shoulders as they studied their medical books. It was generally accepted by everyone in town that Harry would come to nothing.

But Harry wouldn’t have that. He didn’t feel like a simpleton, so why did they label him as such? Was it because he made up his own rules during chess games? Was it because of his kindness to animals? His mother was always angry at him for bringing home stray dogs that had wandered into town. He couldn’t quite put a finger on it. Determined to make something of himself, he started sneaking into his father’s library late at night and borrowing his medical books. By the light of one flickering candle (all of the good lighting was out in the parlor, and he didn’t want to risk getting caught), Harry would read, soaking up all the medical knowledge he could. If his father wouldn’t take him on as an assistant, then perhaps someone else would.

Before Harry could test his theory, his father died, keeling over unexpectedly after dinner one evening. While the brothers took care of their father’s affairs, Harry took care of his mother, who had taken to staying in bed and sobbing at all hours. Harry was kind and patient with her, but she barely took notice of him except to order him around. One day when Harry accidentally gave her lukewarm tea instead of hot, she threw a fit and told him she never wanted to see him again. With the words “worthless good-for-nothing!” ringing in his head, Harry took his pittance of an inheritance and left town.

Harry Brayton

Harry traveled by train through rolling hills and farmland until he happened upon the charming village of May Green. It was very green, indeed, and so enchanting that he decided to settle there. He purchased a piece of land on the edge of town, not far from the Sakima River, and founded a homestead he called Brayton Hill. After buying the property, he had little money left for a house, but he managed to build a small cabin and furnish it with everything he would need to start his new life.

Site Stuff and New Family Idea

First, the nitpicky site stuff:

*The new, improved URL of this here blog is now http://www.jenba.net/sims2, although http://www.jenba.net/wordpress will redirect to it for now. What will no longer redirect is http://www.jenba.net/. Please update your links accordingly.

*I had too many categories, so I did some re-organizing. Stories about the Dobbins, Kilman, and Blakemore families no longer have their own category, but can be found under Maude’s Tales. I only had one post each in the “Hesperos Family” and “Townies” categories, so I deleted those categories. The posts themselves can now be found under General.

And now for gameplay stuff!

I’m going to continue to follow Pinstar’s Legacy Challenge: University rules with Mia Shanley’s legacy. That’s a definite. I’ve decided, however, that playing two Shanley families Legacy-style is Shanley overload for me, so I’m going to let the non-Mia branch of the family die out.

I feel bad even typing that, but it’s not all that different from how I’ve been playing the Shanleys since day one — the heir (in this case, Mia) continues the family line; the spare heirs do not (with the exception of Taryn in 4th gen, who moved out and started her own non-Legacy family). So don’t worry, there will still be stories about the Shanleys — it’ll just be focused on Mia and her progeny.

I might play the Shanley Hall family until everyone there passes away, just to keep them in sync with Mia, but I doubt I will post stories about them — they will probably just pop up in Mia’s story from time to time. I’m trying to keep from having too many houses going at once, and I’d like to have some time for my NEW family, which is going to be a SIMplifiedU Challenge family with a little twist.

Makin’ Friends

In the last update, Mia Shanley had founded her own Greek house, Hoh-Cham-Hoh, and invited several of her friends from the dorms to become members. Some of them moved in with her, allowing her to slowly double the size of the house as the grant money rolled in each semester. Here is 124 Almond Road in all its glory:

124 Almond Road
Hoh-Cham-Hoh House

It’s not much, but it’s a start. You can see the Greek letters on the second story; I had to delete a window to make room for them! And of course, there’s Mia on her cell phone out front, and Darren and Sandy hanging out in the love tub.

Llamas, Togas, and Term Papers

Last we left Mia Shanley, she had finished her sophomore year at Sim State University and changed her aspiration from Popularity to Family. She had also made a few friends and nabbed a boyfriend, Chase Zhang. As her junior year began, I figured she had endured enough of Sim State Dormitory, so I moved her into a tiny rented house at 124 Almond Road. It had a bathroom, living room, and kitchen on the first floor, and a large bedroom on the second. The kitchen was basically a fridge, countertop, and stove, and there was barely room for a table and chairs, but it was all she could afford.

Mia makes a phone call
“I can’t believe I lived in the dorms for two years! This is so much better!”

A New Legacy Begins

Last we left the Shanleys of Shanley Hall, both Mia and her aunt Aurora had left home to attend college at Sim State University. Since Mia is the founder of my new legacy for the Legacy Challenge: University, I’m going to tell her story separately, though Aurora may make an appearance from time to time. Aurora’s college story will be posted at some point in the Shanley Family category.

Now for the update! As you may know, Mia was the first child born in the 10th generation of my Legacy Challenge family. After my last update, a few of you commented that she was pretty, which made me chuckle a bit, because I think she’s scary-looking. But that’s really only when she’s just staring into space with no expression on her face, as in the picture below:

Mia Shanley
“Mmmm….college….aghghhh…”

When she’s talking or laughing or doing pretty much anything else, she looks fine. But as soon as she stops being animated, she looks evil, like she’s sizing someone up so she can figure out the best way to smack them down. I think it’s the combination of smiling mouth, downturned brows, and intense eyes. My poor Sims, I’m so hard on them.
