Ooh…The Sims 3

Have you guys seen the very cool article and magazine cover posted on 1UP.com?

OK, so it’s not a whole lot of information yet, but there some very tantalizing bits:

  • The Sims 3 neighborhood — home and community — will be a seamless world. I take this to mean there will be no individual lots, at least when you’re in gameplay mode. So you’d be able direct your Sim to walk out of his house, down the street, and into the shop down the block, following him the whole way.
  • The gameplay will be more focused on Sims getting out and about rather than on filling up their motives bars. This is very good news for those of us who are tired of monitoring our Sims’ bladders. Hopefully they’ll be able to spend more time mingling, working, developing hobbies, making drama, all the good stuff that goes into an entertaining game. More opportunities for stories, too!

It remains to be seen how this will affect things like hood-building — will the Sim’s neighborhood be set in stone, or will we be able to edit/create/modify to our heart’s content? I certainly hope it’s the latter. And I sincerely hope they’ll allow more than one neighborhood, too. An in-game ‘hood editor is also tops on my list.

If they can make things seamless but still allow the kind of flexibility offered by The Sims 2, then this could be the ultimate sandbox game.

Oh, and The Sims 3 web site is up, too! Not much there yet, but still…eeee!

  1. I’m not too hyped yet and I am beginning to wonder if I ever will be. I get the magazine mentioned in the article, so we’ll see (though, I did not get it today, as it said, ha).

I’m worried about the “out and about” statement. It sounds a bit too much like the very failed Urbz and Bustin’ Out… but I’m trying not to assume that’s what they mean, LOL!

If the thing in Free Time is any indicator… eugh. A little too ‘realistic’ looking for me. Poseur model 3D crap freaks me the heck out. I keep saying “wait and see, wait and see”. I’m trying not to worry about it now, though. I haven’t even played Free Time and I’m not done with The Sims 2 yet.

  2. When I heard that Sims 3 was coming out, my first thought was “I’m happy with sims2, why do i need this new game?” That said, it does look like interesting new features are going to be in it. I’m looking forward to hearing more information about Sims3 – i did consider subscribing to the magazine just to get the article mentioned (sign of a true sims junkie) but that’s probably going a bit too far

  3. I’ll admit to being excited. I’d tired of Sims 1 before Sims 2 was even close to coming out, and really only bought Superstar feeling like I had to.. and never even touched Making Magic. I’d heard little bits and pieces about Sims 2 otherwise, but it wasn’t until it was out that I ended up being excited to get my hands on it. So, being around the community and about as Sims 3 info will start coming out is exciting.

I’m both interested and worried about what Sims 3 will bring to the series. Interested, because I really want to see what NEW they can do. I’ve loved Sims 2, and even though I’ve done through my months of not touching the game, I DO still enjoy PLAYING it. But I’m ready for a change, ready to see what new AI will bring to the table, maybe a different structure. I’m interested to see if they can make sims seem more like individuals, instead of somewhat cookie-cutter personalities. More customization would be wonderful as well.

But I’m also worried. I’ve visited various community forums and seen what people would like to see in Sims 3, and I really hope the creators don’t take a huge cue from the community. I like the Sims because I /enjoy/ the cartoony-ness, and I enjoy the silliness. I don’t want my sims to speak english, or look too realistic (ie: photoskinning or whatever). And I fear the series getting too darn repetitive. We’re in for Sims 3 expansion packs.. that’s a given. But I don’t want to see another half of those just be upgraded Sims 1/2 EPs. Yes, the community likes its pets and weather and such. But I think, by this point, that stuff should really be included in the base game. Do I honestly think it will though? No. And so we can expect another Pets expansion, and another weather expansion, and probably another travel expansion. Which, by that point, I don’t even know if I’ll be that excited about. I put up with remakes for Sims 2. I don’t want to trudge through them again in Sims 3. Not when there’s so many other ideas out there for them to cover.

I’m reserving judgement on the “out and about” comments. No more bladder bars/etc sounds like a good thing.. but on the other hand, it’s hard to imagine a sims game without that sort of stuff. And being able to walk down the street to the store, following along? Sounds nifty.. but also like it could be laggy. Which reminds me, I hate to imagine what sort of computer I’m going to have to upgrade to play both Sims 3 AND Spore!

So, I dunno. I’m excited and nervous all at once. I really want this game to blow me away, just like Sims 2 did. I want to start playing Sims 3, then go back to Sims 2 and wonder, “How in the world did I ever ENJOY THIS? It’s so primitive and dull!” Just like I did whenever I’ve gone back to Sims 1 after playing Sims 2. But I’m finding it hard to believe that I’ll ever think that.

But! I guess we’ll start to see March 19, eh? :D

  4. I’m really excited about what I’ve heard so far. Two things concern me:

    1) I don’t know how saved games are going to work now that we’ll be able to wander all over the hood. I like having my separate families and would like more information on what this is actually going to be like (which I know I won’t get for a long, long time).

    2) I’ve heard they’re going to make it very easy to change the look of objects in game with “no need for developer tools”. I really, really hope that we can still add our own textures to the game then. Recolouring Maxis ones over and over would get old and they’ll never be able to include enough different colours and patterns so that I wouldn’t get bored of them.

    Otherwise…squeee!

  5. Wow, that looks so cool! I’m sure that I will love anything Sims-related, and am really looking forward to the Sims 3. However, there are still some things in the Sims 2 I still haven’t done. For example, I’ve never had a vampire, never had a werewolf, never had a zombie, never had a robot and so forth. I guess I need to get on the ball and enjoy all the quirkier aspects of the Sims 2 before the Sims 3 takes over!

  6. hey Jen glad u found out about the sims 3 and u gotta look at this site it has some unbelievable pics from sims 3 i dont no where the hell she got them from but u gotta look and i’m so glad they finally considered 1. this new no motives kinda thing it seems so much better than watching my 9 year old sisters sims die and houses bein burnt down lol and 2. they got rid of loadin scenes YYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!! on my old pc they would take like 15 mins i wonder if it will let u see sims schools and work in sims 3 that would be so cool!!!! don’t u think so? anyway like i said u gotta look at this site it is unbelievable.P.s. i just imagined like my sim lookin over the fence and goin “hi jim!” at the neighbour. 7. My first thought is …. that’ll take for-evah to load.
My second thought is …. OMIGOSH THE SIMS 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. kitty, I’m 99.99% certain those aren’t Sims 3 pictures on that site. ;) For starters, in some of those pictures is the Sims 2 panel thing in the bottom left corner (they won’t keep it looking exactly the same for Sims 3), and the Sims 3 logo they’re showing looks just like the Sims 1 logo, just with a 3 after it. Those neighborhood pictures are really pretty, but almost certainly not from Sims 3. :)

  9. Yeah, there are a ton of things I haven’t done in The Sims 2, but we have awhile yet — Sims 3 isn’t due to come out until 2009ish. And as I’ve mentioned before, TS2 gameplay has already gotten old for me. If I weren’t all gung-ho about building a ‘hood, and inspired by people like Jade, I doubt I’d be playing. So anyway, I’m VERY excited for TS3. I share some of the same concerns as you guys regarding the look, the gameplay, and the possible lagginess. But considering how RIGHT they got things with TS2, I’m not all THAT worried. Maybe I should be. ;-)

The letter from TS3 Executive Producer Ben Bell clears up a few things — it sounds like we will indeed be able to share custom content with each other. It’ll just be easier to do, and more integrated into the game. I’m all for that! Also the Sims themselves will be very customizeable — more personality traits, different shapes and sizes, etc. As long as they don’t look TOO creepy, I’m cool with that!

Looking forward to more info and pics as they release it!

  10. “(Yes, previous expansion packs added out-and-about activities, but they were always separate sub-games. Here, everything’s completely integrated.) ”

Hey hey that sounds good for Jade!

Other than that, my thoughts are why can’t they leave us with Sims 2? I like it that way

  11. I guess my biggest concern is Sims 1 and Sims 2 were products of Maxis… while Sims 3 will be a product of EA Games. I apologize if I’m stepping on any toes, but I have about as much faith in EA Games as I have in an nonexistent bridge.

If you’re familiar with The SimCity franchise, you’ll know why I feel this way. ;) SimCity Societies anyone? UGH.

  12. I’m worried and excited about the Sims 3. I’ve barely been able to play the sims 2 since it came out. Only chance I get is when my friend lets me play on her laptop, so I feel like I’ve missed out and have been left behind, and just don’t feel ready for a whole new game. Plus I’m afraid I’ll be left behind again when the sims 3 comes out. Hopefully I’ll have enough resources by then to be able to keep up.

I’m all for the seamlessness! But I worry about how it may lag, and the kind of system requirements needed to run this thing smoothly. That’s been my problem with sims 2. I’d hate to have to buy a new computer for that, then turn around and upgrade or buy another just so I can play sims 3. So, I’ll just have to save up and wait for more information. I just hope this one lives long enough. *crosses fingers*

But my biggest dread is how different the sims themselves may look. I love them the way they are. The ones I’ve seen for sims 3 so far are rather creepy, and almost too simple and realistic.

I’d love to see some repeated expansions, but change them up enough or combine some for change. In my opinion, things like weather and university, vehicles, hobby stuff, and even pets (hopefully) should be included in the base game. It would just seem silly otherwise.

    But yeah, can’t wait!

  13. I don’t know if I can get myself to trust something EA made. I buy all the Sims 2 stuff they make, just because I have to, but my pc probably can’t handle The Sims 3, I can’t afford a new pc nor the game probably, and I’m seriously scared of how many bugs would be in, because with how Pets and BV screwed stuff up..
But well, knowing me, as soon as I have a pc I can play The Sims 3 on, I’ll buy it. I just hope I can resist, because I don’t trust EA-products anymore.

  14. I can’t wait for the sims 3 website to come up and see what it is all about. I like all the things they said they were going to do to the game, but my computer can bearly handle the sims 2 lol I would like to see improved clothing and hair styles though. ;)

  15. Its Gonna be Made By EA?
    Hmmm. Im Not Sure now.

    lol.

I dont really play Games by EA too much, so i wouldn’t really no what to expect.
I Havn’t played sim societies either.

    xx
Im still looking forward to the new info on the site. Then i think i will be able to sree if i shud be excited or not!! lol

  16. After reading through/viewing all the info that’s come out the last day or two, all I can say is that I find some aspects really interesting, and some worrying (mostly due to lack of more info). But I am determined to remain neutral on it until closer to release.

But geez, our sims fandom is insane. o_O; People already hating on the game, when we know next to nothing about it.. or absolutely loving it, when many of the features could (and probably will) change. We probably have over a year until release, people! Chill a bit!

  17. It’s not like they will forbid us to play Sims2.. lol. I will wait and see, and I am not abandoning my simmies in Windlebridge as fast as I did with my poor Sims1-simmies.. once I played Sims2 it was just impossible to go back. If the same will happen with Sims3? I doubt it. Maybe. It will take some time (expansion packs, custom content developement) before Sims3 will get to the same level of customization as Sims2 currently.. so maybe we can play them both, at least for a while.

  18. Hey Jen I just thought!!!! If the neighbourhood is seamless then that means that we can see school and work too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This game is getting cooler by the minute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. OK, the sims 3 it’s finally here! Well almost here. For me, The sims 2 got really boring after a while all i was doing was making sims and making families just to try out new custom content. And i got nothing out of the game from it… All i would do is try and fill up their moods and that wasn’t very fulfilling. I am very happy about the way the sims 3 looks so far and it looks like a better Game. I see everyone complaining about the sims’ looks but i don’t think they remember what the defualts on the sims 2 looked like! The sims creators aren’t as good at making sims as some custom creators out there are but everyone needs to get the stick out of their butts and deal with it! If there is gonna be custom content then count on it being beautiful. If not then oh well. It still looks like a great game. Besides, what more do you expect from them, ITS A GAME! If you wan jaw-dropping realism, then get off the computer and talk to REAL people for fun. How about that?

  20.
