Up, Up, and Away

Just for fun I tried building the house from the movie Up (which is a wonderful movie, by the way — just bring tissues!). It didn’t turn out much like the actual house, but I enjoyed giving it a shot.

Sims 3

It made me really miss custom content and being able to adjust individual roof slopes. Hopefully we’ll get the roof slope adjuster in a future XP (as we did with TS2), and as for custom content, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it can be done. I’m already amazed at how quickly things like mods and custom skins have come out, so maybe custom objects will follow relatively soon.

  1. adorable! I think it looks great. I enjoyed the movie too, but like you said, bring tissues!

    • Thanks, Gethane! And yes, that movie really tugs at your heartstrings, doesn’t it? Darn you, Pixar!

  2. But, but, but … I thought TS3 already had a roof adjuster! *checks Prima Guide* Bah … I didn’t find anything in my cursory search, but I coulda sworn there was something you could do to the roofs. :O\ House is cute though. :O) What’s it look like inside?

    • TS3 has a roof adjuster, but it adjusts all the roofs on the lot at the same time, so you can’t have one roof be 70 degrees and another be 25, for example. In TS2 we eventually got a “individualroofslopeangle” cheat that would let us do that, and then by Apartment Life, we finally got the sliding adjuster for individual roofs. I wish they would have implemented that right away with TS3, but alas! I should be happy we can adjust the roof at all. :)

  3. Jen-

Don’t doubt yourself! The house looks amazing and is exactly how I remember it from the movie! I love your site and visit every single day (yes I do have an actual life, hard as it may be to believe at the moment). I love love love your stories, and I hope you will decide to try one with TS3, because with the new towns I think the story-telling possibilities are endless!

    Much Love, Rose

    • I haven’t seen the movie, so I can’t say whether the house matches or not . . . but it is cute as heck! Tour, please?

    • Rose – Hi and thanks so much for your nice comments! And LOL at having a life — what is that? I’m not sure if I have one. Hehe.

Lisa – If I finish the inside, I promise to post pics!

  4. The big issue right now is what EA’s done to prevent such things. Modding now has to be done by people who actually know a programming language fairly well, not to mention getting to the code, which is encrypted. Also, JM’s mod is amazing, but given what EA has done, is prone to crashing on load and you have to ‘voodoo bug fix’ it to get it to function… which isn’t really his fault. But it means a lot of users who aren’t as knowledgeable will pass up using it simply because of that. Not to mention only using one mod at a time. Blegh!

I am definitely hoping the time will come for custom content, but I’m seriously wondering if it’s going to be limited to the extremely knowledgeable, too. Or if it’s just going to be a big huge bother like modding is turning out to be. Also, how will the game run when bogged down with CC? People are already reporting sluggish play with just TS3 store stuff. Sigh.

Anyway, the house is great! It’s like a little gingerbread house. I haven’t seen the movie. My fiance really isn’t to cartoon stuff, whereas I LOVE IT. I wondered if it would end sadly, though, now I know it will. Still wanna see it!

    • Yeah, I was pretty pessimistic about custom content for TS3, given how hard they’ve made it to do so, but then I was amazed at how quickly mods started coming out. So now I’m more on the optimistic side. :) If there’s anything being a Sims fan has taught me, it’s that there are a heckuva lot of talented people out there who are genius at creating stuff for the games we love. We might not ever have quite the same amount of shinies for TS3 as we do for TS2, but I think we will get some shinies eventually. I hope. The bogging down of the game is not good, though. I hope we can find away around that.

As for Up, I wouldn’t say it ends sadly. It has some sad parts sprinkled throughout. But it’s also very funny, a lovely story with great voice acting, and has GORGEOUS visuals. And I’m a big old sap who cries when watching the Return of the Jedi, so… ;)

  5. Wow Jen, from the outside it looks cool!

I love your houses and their designs, and you never fail to surprise me!!

  6. Oh, that’s adorable! I’ve never seen Up but I do like your house.

I’m really hoping we can get some custom meshes soon but I’m wanting them more for clothing and hair than for objects. Most of the objects I can make look good with CAST but the clothes and hair? Some of them just look terrible and there’s not much I can do about it. :\

    • I totally agree with you on the clothes and the hair. Actually, I’m not tired of the clothes YET, but I have a feeling I will be soon. Heh. But yeah, the hair…*shudders* We have more options than base game TS2, but I hate most of them! :-p Especially for the guys.
