The Burrs Expand…Slowly

Burr Family
“Sorry to wake you up, Vinny dear, but you have to see what just dropped into my hands!”

I was still bitter over breaking my “Green Thumb” handicap, so I didn’t give her any of names on my plant/flower list. Instead, I named her Belinda.

Burr Family
“I hope the little dear doesn’t make too many messes…”

Belinda’s eyebrows are black because Azalea’s custom hairstyle is based on a black-haired style. Azalea’s brows were black, too, but I changed them to Lyran’s medium blonde brows.

Belinda has her mother’s eyes, too, which are also by Lyran. Actually, all my eyes are by Lyran now, because I changed the defaults. Vinny’s brown ones are similar to Azalea’s brownish-green ones, so it’s hard to tell the difference unless you zoom in close.

In no time, Azalea was instructing her little one on the importance of good hygiene.

Burr Family
“We love to be clean, don’t we, pumpkin? Clean, clean, clean…and sparkly!”

Vincentio helped out when he could, and was quite the loving father. But aren’t they all, really? I don’t think I’ve seen a bad Sim dad. Neglectful, perhaps, but not mean or unwilling to snuggle their kids. It’s still cute, though.

Burr Family
“Mm, you smell like soap, little Lindy…very STRONG soap…exactly how many times did Mommy bathe you today?”

Slowly but surely the house expanded. I closed the bathroom off and worked on creating a room next door so they could have their beds indoors. Building a room 2 walls and floors at a time is quite painful, but it’s extremely rewarding when you finally finish a room. You won’t see that until the next update, though, because it took a loooong time!

One of the things I haven’t purchased yet is a dining room table. So the Burrs still eat at the chess table.

Burr Family
“You know, I don’t see why we need a dining room table. I’m perfectly fine with holding my plate. If we had a table, it would just get dirty!”

Burr Family
“I see, dear.”

Hey, what is Natalie Portman doing in my game?

Burr Family
“I work with Vinny, what’s it to you? And my name’s NOT Natalie!”

Ah yes, she’s a townie named Roxy Descartes, and I think she looks awesome, aside from the lavender face paint. It’s too bad I’m having only female heirs in this legacy, because she’d be cool to marry into the family at some point (especially around the 1920s or so — she’d make a splendid flapper). And she looooves Vincentio. She’s always calling him and coming home from work with him.

At any rate, Belinda quickly became a toddler, with her mom’s blonde hair but those darned black brows.

Burr Family
“I’m cute, though, right?”

I don’t have her stats handy because I’m not at home, but she has the most awesome stats of any kid I’ve ever had. Something like 35 points total, with 10s in Outgoing and Activity, and a 7 in Nice. She’s fairly neat (I think around a 5) and serious (a 3 or so). I have no idea where the 10 in Outgoing came from, because both of her parents are Shy (Azalea’s a 1 and Vinny’s a 3, I believe). I wouldn’t mind her being more playful, but I’m not going to complain. She’s a great kid and will make a fabulous heir, methinks.

Here she is, grown into a child already:

Burr Family
Belinda Burr, Gen 2 Heir

The best way to keep your kids’ fun levels up when you don’t have a TV and video game console? Chess and piano. Lots of it.

Burr Family
“What’s a video game?”

Especially piano. Belinda maxed her Creativity several days before teenhood, and she’s not even that Playful.

Burr Family
“I take my piano-playing very seriously!”

And what’s this? Another baby was born, but I failed to take pictures of Azalea’s pregnancy OR the baby itself? Good heavens, what was wrong with me? Guess I’d better make up for it with oodles of toddler pics…

Burr Family
“Daddy, how come you don’t tip ME upside down anymore?”

Meet little Basil Burr, who would make a lovely spare heir, except that he’s a boy. He can’t be an heir unless I break the Matriarchy handicap. So he’s basically useless. But oh-so-cute! And his stats aren’t bad, either, if I recall correctly. Not as spiffy as his sister’s, but pretty close.

Burr Family
“Come on, how can you say I’m not as spiffy as my sister?”

He has his dad’s hair, nose, and skin tone, and his mom’s eyes and mouth. Man, I never get tired of Sims 2 genetics. I’m always so eager to see what the kids are going to look like. I wasn’t sure if Azalea’s and Vinny’s genes would mix well, but the kids ended up cute, sweet, and well-behaved. I’m terribly attached to them already.

  1. GASP. Where is Basil’s hair from?! It’s insanely adorable. It makes me want to reach out and hug the little guy and kiss the top of his head. Anyway! Cute family. Can’t wait to read more about them. :D

  2. BASIL! :D Yaaaay! Aww, he’s way way cute. And I love the little knitted looking outfit you gave him for his childhood years, Jen! Belinda looks every inch the proper heir, the thin mouth makes her look even more prim and proper than her mom. Aww, poor flowers. Flowers are tricky beasties, I always end up overwatering the little buggers.
I adore that family portrait! :D Would you mind if I try and make it look vintage style?

  3. Hurray, another update! Those kids are adorable. Belinda will make a good heir I think, and Basil… you’re not really going to kill him are you? He will haunt your forever if you do that! Well… I guess that is kind of the point. I guess Vincentio’s cronic trash-taking-out came back to bite you in the butt. That’s too bad, I don’t think I could handle maintaining a garden without a gardener. Did I say gardener? I meant daily gardener hack. I’m horrible like that. Love those butterflies, hate actually caring for the plants that spawn them. I’m glad you are having fun with this legacy family and I hope you keep enjoying them for many months to come. Can’t wait to see those Burr teenagers, and the complete bedroom!

  4. Hiya Jen!

Loving the Burrs! The children are especially adorable. By the way, don’t panic about the flowers! Pinstar says on his website that if your Sim breaks a rule without you knowing it, just fix it right away.

“What happens if I break a restriction by mistake without lifting it first?”
“Technically you fail the challenge. However, small goofs won’t cause you to fail as long as you fix them immediately. For example, if you move a couch before lifting the athletic restriction, you can just move it back to exactly where it used to be when you realize your error and not fail. If you goof and forget to pay protection money, just pay it as soon as you realize. If a Sim autonomously does something that breaks a restriction (like playing games on the computer before you unlock science) just cancel their action as soon as you notice it. You won’t fail the challenge just because of that. Knowingly breaking an unlifted restriction (giving up) will cause you to fail the challenge.”

I realize this is actually for the Apocalypse Challenge, but I bet you it probably does apply to the Legacy Challenge too! I’m sure if you just replace that spot of flowers it’ll be ok ;) I mean it WAS a Sim’s fault not yours!

  5. This challenge is fun! Infact I started yet another legacy so I could do it!, hee hee. ANyways…aww Basil is a cutie! so is Belinda, and you could have Basil marry uh Natalie, I know that’s not her name but…I’ve had books stand on their side, it was odd. I couldn’t tell you why it happened.

  6. Awww! The newest batch of Burrs are simply adorable. I’m loving the time period clothing. The horse carts crack me up with the lights and whatnot.

I don’t think I’d be smiling either if I lived in the middle of nowhere with a house lacking walls and flooring! You’ve got a lot of discipline, that would drive me crazy. Just building two walls at a time? Wow.

I don’t blame you for not wanting to randomly kill sims. I’ve never been very good at it, either. The cowplant was definitely lost on me. Now if Maxis remedied the whole character cap/dead character files/etc thing… maybe then I’d see the humor in it all. ;)

  7. I LOVE the Burrs. They are all very likeable, very cute, and a great family together. DON’T KILL LITTLE BASIL OFF! NOOOOO! He is sooo adorable! I would be so frustrated by the middle of nowhere handicap…good for you that you have restrained yourself so far! Can’t wait for the next update!

  8. adooooooorable – is that enough said for this time ;)? honestly, it is so sweet, makes me want to blog about my new legacy family right away – but no, my founder is still in college, and I won’t be blogging about her until she’s able to be on her own…. and maybe do the ‘middle of nowhere’ thing…. :)

  9. This update was SO CUTE! The restrictions must be tough, I would never be able to make it through with any of those handicaps… haha, so I guess I’ll just stick to the old fashioned rules of the Legacy challenge.

Wow, Basil is acctually a very cute child! I thought that he would end up with a big ol’ nose like his daddy… It kinda sucks he can’t be the heir, because he is my favorite! (sorry, Belinda!) :)

Oh, I always thought that Roxy (she’s named something else in my game) looked a little bit Asian… man, I would love to see what her kids would look like! Too bad…

Anyways, I CANNOT WAIT for the next update! These are so entertaining! Great Job!

    Leslie

  10. Rereading for the fifth time, I decided to comment again. :D Man, Belinda’s stats really are awesome. I love it when kids suddenly have personality mutations like that! It seems to happen more often when the parents both have very little in a stat, like 1 and 2 in Neat = kid has 8-10, etc.
Since Azalea is a Family Sim and you need another girl to have a heir and a spare, are you going to have them make more baby Burrs?
Also, I too vote for Basil and Roxy Descartes/Natalie Portman having kids together! I think they’d have super cute babies. XD
Oh, and I updated! I added more pics to the Goth entry and made a whole new one for the Bluewater Village folks.

  11. Thanks for the comments, everyone! I really enjoy playing this family, so I’m glad you’re liking the updates. To answer some questions –

Audrey – Basil’s hair is one of those unlocked Maxis meshes, but I don’t recall where I got it from…drat. I thought it might have been MTS2, but I can’t find it there. I’ll check when I get home!

Kay – I would love it if you made the family portrait look vintage! You don’t have to – I’m just giving you full permission if you wanted to play around with it.

Jadice – I think it was my fault, though, and not Vincentio’s. I don’t think he would have thrown it away if it hadn’t died already. And the rules state that if one of your flowerbeds dies, you break the handicap. So I’m out of luck. But that’s OK, I’m going to pretend I didn’t break it and just not give myself a point – I like the flower and plant theme I’ve got going on!

Mao – I was curious what you were talking about with the character cap/dead character files comment, so I did some hunting around and found a thread somewhere that talked about it. And you know, that’s exactly what was happening in Mt. Geneva before I accidentally poofed it – dead characters showing up on the family startups, Sims not being able to move out, tombstones acting funny or not showing up at all, etc. Wow. I guess I just had too many people in that neighborhood. It explains a lot.

Kay again (hee)– I did go for a spare heir, but…something weird happened. I heard the lullaby, and Azalea got sick…but then she never got bigger or did the waddle walk. I thought maybe it’s because I have the maternity clothing hack installed, but I’ve had that installed since the beginning, so I’m not sure. I used Insimenator to check her status and she was 75 hours pregnant for several days. She couldn’t go to work because it said she was pregnant, and her motives seemed to be down all the time, as with a pregnant Sim, but…no baby. Eventually she became an elder and I had to “abort” the baby because I wanted her to be able to go to work. So it was a weird glitch. It saddens me to think there WAS supposed to be a baby, though, and I never got to see it. Bummer. And I’d have Basil marry Natalie Portman but I’m inclined to save her for the 1920s – she’d be so perfect! We’ll see…by the way, I’ve fallen in love with Basil – how ridiculous does that sound? Being in love with a Sim? Especially my own Sim? WACKY! But he’s just so danged handsome…I need help.

  12. Done and done. :D I tried first to make it look like a painted portrait, but unfortunately that made their faces into these hollow eyed blurs. So, art noveau poster style it is! http://www.keiliyo.net/blog/pictures/sims/Jenbastuff/burr050.jpg

Aww! Man, that’s one evil glitch. :( Poor Azalea! Poor you!
Hee at Basil! I think you’ll be alright, Jen. I’ve had the occasional ‘crush’ on a Sim too. XD And of course now I want to see pictures of the gentleman in question even more! *flails* It’s like giving cake to a spoiled child: all you hear is ‘more more more’. 0:D

  13. Ooh, I love the pic! That’s such a cool effect. :-D You’re so artistic. Speaking of…would you feel like making a banner for me? Not right this instant or anything…I am planning on overhauling my template soon, and I’d love to have a cool banner, maybe with some of my Sims in it. Just a thought, feel free to say no!

  14. It is the maternity clothes hack that causes that error. It only happens for certain pregnancies under certain conditions, but it just puts the pregnancy in stasis and makes it so it’s impossible for the Sim to have the baby while the hack is in. Taking the hack out and then booting into the lot will usually allow the pregnant Sim to almost immediately give birth if they were stuck before. Then just put the hack back in later and keep your eye out for future bugged pregnancies. Sorry, can’t help but give solutions when I see problems like this. I’m the Help Section Mod over at BoolProp forums (had to plug it, sorry) and this issue has been reported on at least three other occasions, and this method worked for them.

  15. Kay – You have been e-mailed!

Bitsy – Dang, I wish I had mentioned the problem here before! Thanks, Bitsy. Now I know what to do in the future, at least. BoolProp looks like a cool place! I just found the Shoo Flee forums the other day – had no idea there were these huge forums out there, full of stuff.

  16. I was wondering about that, Jen, so I’m glad you mentioned it. So you were having a lot of issues with Mount Geneva? Yeah… with all the subhoods we have now, it isn’t hard at all to reach the character cap. Especially if you’re prone to lots of babies (the 10 kids want is a real killer for high density neighborhoods!). I had a eighborhood I was playing normally just die because I was about six generations in (with about 15 playable houses, and families in each of varying sizes, as well as YAs in University)…and there were just too many dead character files plus regular character files. Poof. Neighborhood just started erroring like nuts before it imploded. Sniff. I still miss those sims!

Don’t feel bad about being “attached” to your sims! Especially a male one. I refer to those as “hot pixels”, because that’s exactly what they are. They normally end up vamped, or immortalized in way too many sim paintings/pictures. Hey, gotta preserve the pixels! ;)

  17. Definately don’t feel bad about loving your sim. I’ve had a couple “hot pixels”, as Mao says, come across my legacy ‘hoods. Calvin.. Dionysus.. the twins, Orion and Hunter. *happysigh*

    And what’s this character cap thing? o_o I’m up yo about G13 with the Legacy’s and they’ve been in Veronaville that whole time. If I need to be watchin’ out for something, let me know. XD;

  18. Hi Jen!

Thanks for your comment on my blog! Yes Grace and Giselle are Generation 4 :). Yeah that family chapel was nice, except it kind of slowed my game down a bit. I don’t have the family on that lot anymore actually, I moved them out when Generation 6 was born. You know how when you load a family it zooms into whatever Sim you have selected? It froze when it did that. That lot was really bugged, Jan’s headstone even disappeared! I was sad cause I didn’t have inventory so I couldn’t save their family portraits or their career rewards :( .I took pictures though, to have proof to still get the points! Pinstar said you can start on smaller lots if your computer can’t handle it, so I moved them onto a lot that’s a bit smaller than 5X5. They were rich enough to have a house built with all the stuff, so that’s what I did :) Whoa sorry this post is so long! Anyway I hope you’re having a good time with the Burrs! Look forward to the next update!

  19. Mao – Haha, “hot pixels”! I love it! Yeah, I have already taken wayyyy too many pictures of Basil. I’m wacko obsessed. Heh.

Audrey – I’m sure Mao can explain it to you better than I can, but there’s also this post by maltesh at TSR that might illuminate the subject for you.

Jadice – Oh no! Buggy lots suck. They are the bane of all Legacies, it seems. At least you’ll get your points. That’s a good thing. :-D

And did you guys see the update on All About Style today? HOOP DRESSES!!! Dang, it makes me reluctant to move on to the next era! I want someone to wear those cool dresses! Heh.

  20. Hey Kay, just wanted to let you know I am an addicted reader of your blog, I just can’t comment because I’m not registered with wordpress…love the legacy!

  21. Oh Jen! The Burrs are great!!! I don’t think you can make a bad family though. The custom content is A+++ How do you find such perfect stuff??? Loved the quilt on the bed. Loved the ‘bathing costume’ The kids are cute, and Basil surely must be worth more than a ghost. Belinda is beautiful and sure to bring a lot of creativity to the family. Sorry the green thumb didn’t work out. And you’re being incredibly patient with your building. I don’t know if I could wait that long, but I can’t wait to see how it all comes together. Love it!!!!

  22. Gender, appearance and personality is determined randomly at birth. Save just before the baby arrives, and if it’s of a gender/looks (you can’t tell personality until toddlerhood) you don’t want you just exit the house without saving, then go back and let the birth happen again. Repeat until you get what you want.
