Good Things About Today

1. It’s spring.
2. It’s Friday.
3. I got my Sims back!!!

Yes, that’s right, after a month of tearing my hair out trying to get my game to run, I’ve finally made some progress. I got University and Nightlife to install by using the Disk Images method recommended by EA, which basically means I copied the CD files to folders on my hard drive and ran the installation from there. I had tried that before, but it kept asking for the CD, so I had moved on to other options. Last night I tried it again just for the heck of it, and what do you know? It worked! I was able to reinstall all of the EPs and play the game for a full 45 minutes with no crashing. That’s a very good sign. I have no idea what made it work this time — maybe I just needed to reboot? I don’t know. But it worked!

I’m going to test the game a bit longer before putting all my downloads back in, which means…playing the Ravelos! My goal is to get those girls graduated from college as soon as possible, so you might see an update on them as early as this weekend. They don’t have their usual hairstyles and stuff, but I’m just happy to be playing them again.

Anyway, just wanted to share the good news! Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

I’ve been playing around with Pleasantview, in my own way: I’ve gone through almost all the Sims and given them plastic surgery to make them purtier. XD Today I shall make those changes permanent, so their kids will also be nice looking.

  8. OOSPORKYAY!

What a horrid ordeal, but I’m so glad it’s finally working! Glad to hear you’re getting an external too! You can never have too many backups!

  10. Hey, Jen? Pinstar’s posted his new OFB Legacy Challenge rules, and they’re looking quite interesting. :D But, in the thread in the forums for it I saw that ga22a666 had posted this nifty idea:
    ———
Technically, the way NPC points work is this: you get to generation 10, and then count the total number of NPC ancestors that the generation 10 heir has.
Trivially, you can score 9 NPC points by having generations 1-9 breed with NPCs. Siblings don’t count, but your inbreeding comment is correct.

You can have the founder start 2 bloodlines, each of whom marries NPCs (call one the “main” and one the “alternate”). At generation 9, this two breed to produce the generation 10 heir. You score -2 for inbreeding, but you have 8 NPCs in each bloodline, so that’s a net of 16 points instead of only 9.

Or the founder could start 3 bloodlines, “main”, “alternate1”, and “alternate2”. The alternates breed at generation 8 to produce a generation 9, who breeds with the generation 9 heir. You score -4 for inbreeding twice, but you have 23 NPCs total (8 in the main bloodline, 7 in each alternate) for a net of 19 points.

For 4 bloodlines (we are ignoring here the logistics required to do this; you’d need to be killing off sims as soon as they breed just to make room), you get 8 for the main bloodline, 7 for alternate 1, 6 for the other two alternates, and -6 inbreeding for a net of 21 points.

It’s workable without too much fuss with 2 bloodlines (I’m doing that in my legacy) as long as you don’t mind having 8 sims at once. I’m not convinced that +3 points for 3 bloodlines is worth the effort (much easier to just make another 9 family friends, for example), but it would be an interesting challenge to see how many you could merge.

I’m going to give the two bloodlines thing a shot!

  11. I am just getting into this Legacy thing, and let me tell you, the Shanely Legacy is impressive! I am reading it slowly, and I am up to your fourth generations! You’ve really inspired me.

  12. Jen, I’m so glad you have fixed your game! I hope you are having fun catching up with your Sims and I hope to see updates again real soon. :) Hope you had a happy easter and that your spring is becoming as warm and bright as mine is!

Kay, I’m doing the same thing in my Legacy, playing with two bloodlines to net more points. Actually, using University’s lovely time-stops-while-at-college deal, I have one bloodline be at college while the other occupies the main lot and then switch. This way I don’t have to have eight Sims on either the main lot or the greek lot. (I usually do though, heh.)

  13. Thanks to everyone for your comments! I’m really anxious to get going again. It’s driving me absolutely batty. Batty, I tell ya!!

Kay and Bitsy – Wow, the two bloodline thing sounds like fun, and also insane. But mostly fun. Good luck with that!

Ernesto – Your site looks awesome! I’ve added you to my links. :-)
